Drum Care

Quote: A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'universe', a part united in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts, feelings as something separate from the rest; a kind of optical illusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of poison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in it's beauty. - (Albert Einstein)

The Drum is very good for grief, stress, trauma, loneliness, depression and anger.

How To Take Care of Your Drum

Treat Your Drum Like a Baby.

Don't leave your drum in the sun or in a hot car (such as in summer) unattended for long periods of time - the skin may shrink to the point of tearing. These are primitive drums and they are subject to climatic conditions. Try to store your drum in a dry place of even temperature.

Cold/ Damp or humid climate: Rawhide has a tendancy to absorb moisture from the atmosphere. This can cause your drum to go wavy/ ripply on the face of the drum, giving it a flat, dull sound.
Solution: Slowly warm the drum in front a fire, heater or use a hair dryer to take out some of the moisture. Take care not to over heat the drum and do not hold it too close to a heat source, especially if using a heater or electric stove top element. About 12 inches away is ideal. We find that heating the drum from the back using a hair dryer works well.

Dry/ Hot Climate: Store your drum in a cool dry room especially in summer. Hot and dry days will draw out moisture from the rawhide. If the drum is affected by the heat it may have a tight pinging sound to it when playing.
Solution: Using a spray bottle you can spray some water into the back of the drum. Rub the water in with your hand so it can be absorbed by the rawhide to balance out the moisture content. Don't use too much water on your drum as it may develop a wavy surface and the tone will go flat.

Storage: When not in use, it's best to either hang it on a wall, in a leather or cloth drum bag or store it flat (face up) and away from animals, especially dogs. This will prevent any warping of the frame due to the changes in the moisture content of the rawhide.

Repairs: If your drum is the victim of an accident, return it to Wolf Drums for repairs. Repairs are cost free, unless the damage was intentional.
